US manufacturing shrinks for first time in 3 years
WASHINGTON (AP) ? U.S. manufacturing shrank in June for the first time in nearly three years, adding to signs that economic growth is weakening.
Production and exports declined, and the number of new orders plunged, according to a monthly report released Monday by the Institute for Supply Management.
The slowdown comes as U.S. employers have scaled back hiring, consumers have turned more cautious, Europe faces a recession and manufacturing has slowed in big countries like China.
"This is not good," said Dan Greenhaus, chief economic strategist at BTIG, an institutional brokerage. Though the report "does not mean recession for the broader economy, it is still a terribly weak number."
The trade group of purchasing managers said its index of manufacturing activity fell to 49.7. That's down from 53.5 in May. And it's the lowest reading since July 2009, a month after the Great Recession officially ended. Readings below 50 indicate contraction.
Economists said the manufacturing figures were consistent with growth at an annual rate of 1.5 percent or less. That would be down from the January-March quarter's already tepid annual pace of 1.9 percent.
"Our forecast that the U.S. will grow by around 2 percent this year is now looking a bit optimistic," said Paul Dales, an economist at Capital Economics.
Stocks fell sharply after the report was released at 10 a.m. But investors appeared to shake off the bad manufacturing news by the end of the day. The Dow Jones industrial average recovered most of its early losses to close down just 8.7 points at 12,871. And broader indexes ended the day up.
Most economists aren't yet predicting another recession. Though the ISM report suggests manufacturing is contracting, it typically takes a sustained reading below 43 to signal the economy isn't growing.
Still, U.S. manufacturing, which has helped drive growth since the recession ended, is faltering at a precarious time.
Americans have pulled back on spending, which drives roughly 70 percent of growth. Europe's economy is likely in recession, which has hurt U.S. exports.
And China's manufacturing sector grew in June at its slowest pace in seven months, according to a survey released Sunday by the state-affiliated China Federation of Logistics and Purchasing.
Manufacturing will likely stay weak for the next few months. The ISM's gauge of new orders, a measure of future activity, plunged from 60.1 to 47.8. That's the first time it has fallen below 50 since April 2009, when the economy was still in recession.
Fewer new orders reflect growing concerns of businesses. In addition to slower global growth and less spending by U.S. consumers, many companies worry that U.S. lawmakers won't extend a package of tax cuts at the end of the year.
Bricklin Dwyer, an economist at BNP Paribas, said the uncertainty "has left businesses unwilling to invest."
A gauge of production in the ISM's survey fell to its lowest level in more than three years.
U.S. factories are also reporting less overseas demand. A measure of exports dropped to 47.5, its lowest level since April 2009.
A gauge of employment edged down but remained at a healthy level of 56.6. That suggests factories may still be adding jobs. Manufacturers have reported job gains for eight straight months.
Overall hiring has slowed sharply this spring. Employers added an average of only 73,000 jobs per month in April and May. That's much lower than the average of 226,000 added in the first three months of this year. The unemployment rate rose in May to 8.2 percent from 8.1 percent, the first increase in a year.
Worries about slowing job growth are outweighing the benefits of lower gas prices. A measure of consumer confidence fell in June for the fourth straight month.
Slower job growth and falling confidence are weighing on consumers' willingness to spend. Americans cut back on purchases of autos and other long-lasting factory goods in May, the government said Friday.
The sharp drop in U.S. factory activity overshadowed more positive news on housing.
Construction spending rose 0.9 percent in May from April, the Commerce Department said in a separate report Monday. It was the second straight monthly increase, even though the level of spending still isn't healthy.
The increase was driven by a surge in residential construction. Home sales are up from the same month last year. Mortgage rates are at the lowest levels in history. And prices have begun to stabilize in most markets.
The economy could also get a boost this summer from lower gas prices, which have tumbled more than 60 cents per gallon since peaking in April. The result is that consumers have more money to spend on other goods, from autos and furniture to electronics and vacations, that fuel economic growth.

The problem with losing weight is that with most of the diet programs and exercise routines they get old and boring excessively fast. When that occurs you lose interest, it is no longer fun and you stop. Losing weight does not have to be boring and tedious it can be fun. Here is how to lose weight and have more fun doing it than you ever thought possible.
The secret to having fun losing weight is to get involved in a recreational sport that you will enjoy. There are lots of sports and recreational activities you can become involved in that will aid you shed undesirable pounds in the process. Getting involved in a recreational activity can also help you reduce stress, overcome depression and improve your self worth.
Decide if you want to do team sport activity or something that you do on your own. There are plenty of recreational things to do for any age. Joining a team can be a perfect thought because then you take on a sense of commitment to your team and it makes it more unmanageable to quit.
Many cities have team sport activities you can become involved in like basketball, baseball, softball, soccer, and hockey. Call your city Parks and Recreation Department they frequently know of team sports like this you can join and have a lot of fun with.
If your city has a bowling alley, bowling that can be a fun activity to get involved in. Usually every bowling alley has teams that people can join. You can unite a bowling league and be any level bowler.
A local YMCA can be a great place to check out. They will have all kinds of recreation programs to join and participate in. It is not uncommon for a YMCA to have classes and programs in yoga, dance, and gymnastics just to name a few fun activities. They also have information on leagues you can join for walking, running, swimming, hiking, horseback riding, rowing and more.
Some individual activities you might want to consider taking up would be tennis, racket ball, ping pong, skeet shooting. If you are more daring consider scuba diving, rock climbing, skiing, snowboarding or sky dives. Fly fishing is something you might want to try. It involves a lot or arm and shoulder movement for burning calories.
You can also go online and look for recreational activities offered in your local community. Consider training for a marathon. Some marathons you can even walk. However the key here is that for several weeks leading up to the marathon you need to train so you will be prepare for the event. That kind of training with a goal in mind keeps you motivated and it can really help you lose weight in the process.
One of the right recreational activities for losing weight and having fun at the same time is to ride your bike. Cycling actually burns more calories in an hour than just about any other form of exercise.
What ever you decide, pick something as soon as possible and get going with it. You will have lots of fun and lose weight in the process.

Armando Montano Dead: Aspiring Journalist And AP Intern Dies At 22
MEXICO CITY -- Armando Montano, an aspiring journalist who was working this summer as a news intern for The Associated Press in the Mexican capital, was found dead early Saturday. He was 22 years old.
Montano's body was found in the elevator shaft of an apartment building near where he was living in the capital's Condesa neighborhood. The circumstances of his death were being investigated by Mexican authorities.
The Colorado Springs, Colorado, resident arrived in Mexico City in early June after graduating from Grinnell College with a bachelor's degree in Spanish and a concentration in Latin American studies.
During his time in the bureau, Montano covered stories including the saga of nine young elephants from Namibia who wound up on an animal reserve in Mexico's Puebla state, and the shooting of three federal policemen at the Mexico City airport.
He was not on assignment at the time of his death. The U.S. embassy is monitoring the course of the investigation.
Montano had planned to attend a master's degree program in journalism at the University of Barcelona in the fall.
With his high energy and broad smile, Montano made scores of friends within weeks after his arrival in the Mexican capital.
"Armando was a smart, joyful, hardworking and talented young man," said Marjorie Miller, AP's Latin America editor based in Mexico City.
"He absolutely loved journalism and was soaking up everything he could," said Miller. "In his short time with the AP, he won his way into everyone's hearts with his hard work, his effervescence and his love of the profession."
In December and January, Montano covered the Iowa presidential caucuses as a news intern for The New York Times, and last year worked for several months as an intern covering policy and finance for The Chronicle of Higher Education in Washington, D.C.
"Mando was a standout young journalist, with a rare passion and exuberance for life and for people," said Richard Berke, an assistant managing editor at The New York Times. "He accomplished so much and touched so many in a short time, and his potential was truly limitless."
Berke said that he arranged to have Montano help cover the caucuses because he was so impressed with the young reporter when they met earlier at the New York Times Student Journalism Institute in Tucson, Arizona.
Kathleen Carroll, executive editor of the AP, said, "The loss of this vibrant young journalist is a shock to his colleagues and the long list of people who called Armando friend."
Montano had also been a multimedia and reporting intern at The Colorado Independent, an online news service; and a reporting and investigative intern at The Seattle Times.
At the Scarlet & Black, Grinnell College's student newspaper in Grinnell, Iowa, he worked as an editor and writer.
Montano was the recipient of an Ellen Masin Persina Scholarship from the National Press Club in 2008; a Newhouse Scholar with the National Association of Hispanic Journalists in 2008; and a Chips Quinn Scholar from the Freedom Forum for Diversity in 2011. He belonged to the National Association of Hispanic Journalists and the National Association of Gay and Lesbian Journalists.
Born in Massachusetts, Montano was a fluent Spanish speaker who grew up in Colorado but lived for two years as a child in Costa Rica and spent time in Argentina and on the U.S.-Mexico border with his family.
He is survived by his parents, Diane Alters and Mario Montano, of Colorado Springs, who both teach at Colorado College.

You've piqued my interest!
Could I just ask, when you tagged 'literate', did you mean there would be length requirement or that you simply hope to keep the quality to a certain standard? Well, either way, I'd like to participate in this.
Just a suggestion, but could you maybe define what races are compatible in terms of 'hybrids'? (Not that I'm going to make one... maybe... I'm not sure yet...) Not all the races would be logical I think, when it comes to zombies and ghosts and all... and would each species have a different set of customs in relation to that or am I just thinking too much? XD
Also, how would the hunters be incorporated into the story line? Would they try to breach the school grounds as such?
I'm sorry for the barrage of questions ^^"
It's just that when I'm interested in a roleplay, I really want to understand it so I can develop a suitable character.
As for a role I want to play, I have far too many at the moment. I might just wait for a few roles to be taken and then assume what's left over...

@Cien- 1st: Literate means at least 6 lines when read like 3 lines per paragraph or just a basic 6 lined post. You pick, I don't really care all that much.
2nd: Undead + Human= Zombie Ghost + Zombie= X Succubus + Incubus = Pureblood or Human. To simplify anything that can't have relationships can infect not make any pureblood, like Zombies. But two zombies can make a pureblood. Hopefully that answers your question.

Hey dark I've got an explanation for the demon ghost thing!
Let's say the demon and ghost employed a necromancer. The necromancer gave the ghost a body. The male don impregnated the female body. And then, the ghost was removed from the body before giving birth.
Okay, that was bad XD but yeah. If it doesn't work, I'll take a normal demon like I said.
