Google vs. Facebook 2012 Big Clash: Who Will Dominate Internet for Next 10 Years?

In 2012, a big clash between Google, the world's largest Internet search engine, and Facebook, world's No.1 social network service, is being predicted.

Forbes reported analysts as saying that year 2012 would be a?critical year for both the companies. Last?June, Google?issued a challenge to Facebook by launching its own social network?called Google+ (Google Plus). But Facebook?counterattacked.

"Facebook has posed serious problems for Google, most notably by walling off the social network?s content from Google?s search engine," Baird's equity research analysts said.

The problem for Google is that its business model relies on its ability to "index the Web." Thus, when Facebook walls off its site, it?s essentially blocking a significant, and growing, portion of the Web. "Google's index has been faced with an ever-increasing blind spot for search," pointed out the analysts.

To solve this, Google has launched its own ambitious social network called Google+. And though it has not yet become a threat to Facebook, yet, soon, it?could grow powerful as Google+ has the backing of Google, which has a powerful influence over the Web and is sitting on a massive cash pile.

This fierce battle?will decide who will monopolize?online advertisement revenue. And it seems that the impact of the clash?will be felt over the next 10 years.

"This is a fight for survival for Facebook -- and for relevancy for Google. What happens in 2012, will make the difference between whether there is a Facebook by the end of the decade and whether Google can become truly relevant outside of search," senior technology analyst Rob Enderle told ComputerWorld.

And, analysts have different opinions about who the winner will be.

According to some analysts, Google will win. First of all, no one can deny that the Internet world currently belongs to Google. With Google controlling more than 65?percent of U.S. search advertisement -- against Yahoo's 16 and Microsoft's Bing 14 --?and more than 50?percent of the global market, it cannot be denied that Google has captured the market. And, Google's Android OS is set to make synergy as it will be integrated into Google+, luring people to live in a Google world.

But Facebook poses a threat to Google. Facebook boasts?750 million users, of whom half log in every day. Accordingly, it causes damage to Google's functions such as Gmail and Gchat. Furthermore, Facebook is also reportedly working on its own search engine. Indeed Facebook threatens the online dominance of Google. And once Facebook launches the?initial public offering expected in the first half of 2012, it will not face any cash shortage when it battles with Google head on.

Indeed, year 2012 would see a full-scale battle between Google and Facebook and it is too early to say that who the ultimate winner will be.

Indian TV grows edgy ? without the edge (AP)

NEW DELHI ? Would the sex, drugs and rock-n-roll fueled TV show "Californication" be worth watching without the sex, drugs and rock-n- roll? What about serial killer series "Dexter" without the gore?

In an effort to attract younger viewers without offending the older ones, Indian TV is now showing some of America's edgiest shows ? but cutting out the edge.

As India urbanizes and its middle class grows, a delicate dilemma has hit a media culture long dominated by local TV shows aimed at rural audiences, such as the soap opera "Baalika Vadhu" or "Child Bride," about a girl married off at age 10. While the young and hip audiences that attract advertising dollars want foreign imports, no broadcaster wants to upset conservative viewers or attract government ire.

"This is a very sensitive time for the media in India," said TV critic Shailaja Bajpai. "Many stations are afraid of government banning orders," but at the same time, output needs refreshing to bring in audiences."

So TV channels resort to inconsistent and clumsy self-censorship, snipping scenes that are central to a show's plot with abandon. While they bleep out profanities, they will also cut a reference to the drug "crack" from one part of a show, while letting it slide a few minutes later.

Even more absurd are the imports that have English subtitles to assist those with a shaky grasp of the language. Censors often let the spoken word slide through, but change it or strike it completely from the subtitles. So while a character on "The Big Bang Theory" is allowed to say the word "intimate," the subtitles only showed "int ------."

One incident turned an episode of "Friends" into a legend of unwatchable TV. The show hinged on the gag that two pages in a cookbook got stuck together and the character Rachel mistakenly made a fruit pastry with beef. The station bleeped out the word "beef," a show of sensitivity for Hindus' reverence for cows, leaving viewers to guess why her diners were so disgusted.

It's just as perplexing for the suddenly chaste vampires of HBO's lusty "True Blood" and for the serial killer star of "Dexter," who is constantly changing blood-splattered clothes for no apparent reason on Indian TV. Or for David Duchovny's "Californication" lech Hank Moody, who disappears into a bedroom with a beautiful women and then suddenly appears in a disjointed scene from later in the episode.

Nevertheless, young Indians, who have embraced Levis, McDonalds and MTV, are hungering for Western television.

"I no longer want to watch the stupid shows I watched with my family growing up, I want entertainment and there is very little on Hindi-language television," said Abhinav Mohan, a 22-year-old mass-communication student, who watches the disjointed imports instead. "Though heavily censored, I can still follow them."

Broadcasting the shows, while editing them into confusion, underscores the fine line entertainment companies like the NewsCorp-owned Star and FX are trying to walk to attract urban youth while not angering their more traditional parents.

Bollywood actors only began kissing onscreen in the last decade. As recently as 2007, an arrest warrant was briefly issued for Hollywood star Richard Gere after he kissed the cheek of Bollywood actress Shilpa Shetty at an AIDS awareness rally.

"Indian produced movies and TV are very formulaic, you always know what you are going to get," said Rahul Gupta, a media company owner in New Delhi. "Today's youth are more likely to get what they want from Hollywood than Bollywood and TV companies are starting to realize it and hope to cash in."

In an effort to head off government interference, the industry created its own regulatory body in June to deal with complaints. Now, in addition to the odd censoring, viewers must also suffer a banner that repeatedly scrolls across the screen, advising viewers how to complain to the Broadcasting Content Complaints Council. More than 3,000 have.

The complaints range from "scantily and vulgarly dressed women" on MTV's "Grind" to a scene "misguiding children to kill," on the southern Indian family melodrama "Muddu Bidda," or "Cute Girl."

So far, only six channels have been called in for a hearing. Their apologies have been enough to satisfy the council and prevent it from referring the cases to the government, which has the power to ban shows.

LOS ANGELES ? Russell Brand and Katy Perry are getting a divorce, the British comedian told The Associated Press Friday.

"Sadly, Katy and I are ending our marriage. I'll always adore her and I know we'll remain friends," said Brand, 36, offering no other details.

He and the 27-year-old pop singer were married in October 2010 at a resort inside a tiger reserve in India.

Brand's recent film credits include "Arthur," "Hop" and "Get Him to the Greek." He is among the ensemble starring alongside Tom Cruise in "Rock of Ages," set for release next year.

Perry's run of No. 1 singles earned her the distinction of becoming MTV's first artist of the year earlier this month. She hosted "Saturday Night Live" on Dec. 10 and gave no indication the couple was in trouble.

The couple got engaged in January 2010 after meeting at the 2009 MTV Video Music Awards, where he hosted and she performed.

He was effusive about his bride while promoting projects earlier this year, saying marrying Perry has "given me much more strength in what I do."

"For a long while, what I do professionally was all that mattered to me really," he said in March. "Now I think, well, whatever I do, I'll just go back to her, and that's incredibly comforting."

He cited irreconcilable differences in papers filed Friday in Los Angeles Superior Court.

A representative for Perry did not immediately return a call seeking comment.

Flynn throws 6 TDs, Packers beat Lions 45-41 (AP)

GREEN BAY, Wis. ? Aaron Rodgers got to rest up for the playoffs. Somehow, the Green Bay Packers' passing game became even more dangerous with Matt Flynn.

The backup Matt Flynn threw for a franchise-record six touchdowns, the final one to Jermichael Finley with 1:10 left, giving the Packers a 45-41 victory over the Detroit Lions in a wild regular-season finale Sunday.

With Rodgers bundled up on the sideline in cold and windy conditions at Lambeau Field, Flynn set Packers records with 480 yards passing and the six TDs. It was an ideal afternoon for the Packers (15-1), who got to rest Rodgers and several other big-name players without losing playoff momentum.

Flynn barely got the Packers past Matthew Stafford, who threw for 520 yards with five touchdowns and two interceptions for the Lions (10-6). Detroit has lost 21 straight road games to the Packers, including the postseason.

But the Lions head to the playoffs for the first time since 1999 as a wild card.

According to STATS LLC, it was the first time in NFL history opposing quarterbacks each threw for 400-plus yards and five-plus touchdowns in a game. The teams' combined 971 net yards passing broke the record of 906 set earlier this season in a Week 1 game between New England and Miami.

Jordy Nelson had nine catches for 162 yards and three touchdowns for the Packers.

Calvin Johnson had 11 catches for 244 yards and a touchdown, and Titus Young had a pair of touchdowns for the Lions.

With the afternoon off, Rodgers' season quarterback rating of 122.5 coming into the game broke Peyton Manning's single-season mark of 121.1 set in 2004.

With NFC home-field advantage for the playoffs secured, the Packers also rested several key players with nagging injuries: including cornerback Charles Woodson, linebacker Clay Matthews, wide receiver Greg Jennings, right tackle Bryan Bulaga, running back James Starks and wide receiver Randall Cobb.

For a while, it looked like the Lions would take advantage of their absence.

With the Lions trailing 24-19 at the half, Stafford got some help from the Packers' defense in the third quarter. An unnecessary roughness penalty on outside linebacker Erik Walden and a personal foul on linebacker Desmond Bishop helped set up a 2-yard touchdown from Stafford to Young for a 26-24 lead.

Flynn answered right away, throwing a 58-yard touchdown to Nelson to give the Packers a 31-26 lead.

The Lions went back into the lead on a 5-yard touchdown throw to Kevin Smith and a 2-point conversion to tight end Tony Scheffler to put Detroit ahead 34-31.

Ndamukong Suh came up with a third-down sack on the Packers' next possession, mocking Rodgers' "title belt" celebration after dropping Flynn to the turf. Suh, of course, was suspended for two games after he stomped on Packers guard Evan Dietrich-Smith in Green Bay's win on Thanksgiving.

But the Lions failed to convert on fourth down in Packers territory, and Flynn marched Green Bay for a 35-yard touchdown to Driver to give the Packers a 38-34 lead.

Johnson drew a pass interference penalty on Tramon Williams to give the Lions the ball at the Green Bay 28. Scheffler hauled in a one-handed catch to set up first-and-goal on the 2.

Johnson then was called for offensive pass interference in the end zone, but Stafford threw a 12-yard touchdown pass to Scheffler in the back of the end zone and the Lions took a 41-38 lead with 2:39 left.

Flynn wasn't finished, finding James Jones for a 40-yard completion to set up first-and-goal at the 6 with 1:19 left. Flynn found Finley to win it.

With the Lions threatening again in the final minute, Sam Shields' interception put the game away.

The Packers got off to a rough start. Flynn was sacked and fumbled on the Packers' first possession, and Stafford cashed in with an 8-yard pass to Young.

Packers backup returner Pat Lee tried to field the ensuing kickoff in the end zone, but it bounced off him and over the goal line. Lee then tried to pull the ball back for a touchback ? but officials ruled a safety that gave the Lions a 9-0 lead.

Flynn then found his rhythm, and the Packers led 24-19 at halftime.

Windows desktop client for Facebook Messenger has been officially launched that allows users to keep tabs on notifications, friend requests, ticker, and chat all without opening your browser.

Messenger for Windows, which is a one-time set up that allows all future updates to be automatically installed, basically brings the right-hand side of your Facebook home page to your desktop.

Users can listen in with friends or view pictures via the desktop app, which is now available via public download link in the social media site's Help Center, and will only run on will only run on Windows 7 operating system.

With the new client, users will be able to see the latest updates from their community, chat and message with Facebook friends, and get quick notifications.
