The Who fans trade in 1979 tickets 33 years later

PROVIDENCE, R.I. (AP) ? It was December 1979 when Emery Lucier learned the concert he was eagerly awaiting in Rhode Island by British rock band The Who had been canceled over safety concerns. The 17-year-old was so angry he knocked over a chair in his high school classroom.

"I just remember being so upset about the whole thing," he said.

Lucier, now 50, of Milford, Mass., held onto the ticket, for which he paid $25 ($12.50 for the ticket and $12.50 more for the scalper). On Tuesday, he and nine other people traded in tickets from that canceled show and got new ones for The Who's final appearance on its Quadrophenia tour in February at the Dunkin Donuts Center, the same venue it was supposed to play 33 years ago.

The venue's general manager, Lawrence Lepore, said earlier this month he would honor tickets for the 1979 show, which then-Mayor Buddy Cianci canceled after a stampede before a Who concert in Ohio killed 11 people. Any 1979 tickets the venue receives will be donated to the Special Olympics of Rhode Island, which plans an August eBay auction of the 14 tickets turned in on Tuesday.

Ed McConnell, now 50, was a high school student in Pawtucket and planned to attend the concert with about 15 friends. He said he remembers the disappointment when he heard the concert was canceled, and even now can list reasons why it was a bad decision, among them that the concert had assigned seats and not festival seating ? which is what was blamed for the stampede in Cincinnati.

"I still don't agree with it," McConnell said after trading in his and his brother's tickets for the show.

McConnell said he met Cianci once and took the opportunity to complain.

Sandy Ball exchanged two tickets that her brother, Stephen, now of Colonial Heights, Va., had waited in line for overnight when he was a college freshman. The tickets have moved 16 times since then with Stephen, who was in the military. Ball said her family remembers the day when he learned the show was canceled.

"We had to talk him off the cliff," she said.

Barry Belotti, now 53, of Fitchburg, Mass., estimates he's seen The Who 100 times but still remembers the canceled show in Providence. He had second-row tickets and had bought several other tickets for friends to come along.

"We were pretty upset about it," he said.

He got a refund on most of the tickets after the show was canceled but kept one as a memento in a binder filled with newspaper clippings about the band and photos of singer Pete Townsend. Belotti said he is planning to see the band play on four or five stops on this tour, one he's especially looking forward to because it's playing the 1973 album "Quadrophenia," which is especially meaningful for him.

"It was very instrumental in my adolescence," Belotti said. "Townsend's writing, he was talking about me."

As for Lucier, he never got a chance to see The Who perform after that canceled 1979 show, until now. He's held onto the ticket for decades.

After he heard he could exchange his old ticket for a new one, he started digging and found it in a box with about 65 other stubs.

The one for The Who was the only one that wasn't ripped.

After SB 1070 Ruling, Indiana's AG Believes Part of State's Anti ...

by Mahwish Khan on 08/01/2012 at 1:55pm

The Supreme Court?s ruling that finds most of Arizona?s SB 1070 as unconstitutional is impacting other states that have passed similarly egregious legislation. Indiana, for example:

Indiana Attorney General Greg Zoeller [a Republican!] conceded Tuesday that a key portion of the state?s anti-illegal-immigration law is unconstitutional, and it appears unlikely lawmakers will revise the statute anytime soon to make it enforceable.

Zoeller?s decision comes after the U.S. Supreme Court?s landmark ruling June 25 to strike down similar measures in Arizona law. In the aftermath, legal scholars said the far-reaching implications of the ruling doomed sections of Indiana?s law.

After reviewing the decision the past month, Zoeller agreed.

?The Supreme Court made clear that immigration enforcement is a federal government responsibility,? he said.

Yes, it is. And at least one of the states that followed Arizona?s lead is now facing that reality:

Tuesday, Zoeller filed a legal motion conceding the Supreme Court made it clear that state laws can?t allow local officers to arrest people for immigration violations in certain instances.

But that doesn?t end the case, still pending in the U.S. District Court of the Southern District of Indiana. The Supreme Court made no mention of the use of foreign-issued ID cards in the Arizona ruling. Zoeller has asked the Southern District court to rule on that matter. There is no timetable for a decision.

Still, in a strong signal the issue won?t gain momentum again at the Statehouse, House Speaker Brian Bosma, R-Indianapolis, said he told Zoeller he got the decision right.

This is another blow to the author of SB 1070-type legislation: Kris Kobach. His grand scheme to have individual states enact their own self-deportation laws is crumbling.

St Casimirs Mortgage Minute: Got flood insurance?

Although strangely mis-titled, this article has some good info about flood insurance.?? Banks are required by regulators to carefully check the flood determination zone of every property it loans on.

From Consumerist.com:

For the last few years, the folks at the Federal Emergency Management Agency have been issuing more accurate flood plain maps at the same time as the government has made a renewed push for mortgage lenders to help make sure homeowners who need flood insurance are actually purchasing it. But even though these new maps should be making it more clear to everyone whether or not one's home is in a flood plain, the banks appear to be playing fast and loose with the rules in order to force customers into more expensive insurance policies.

See, while part of your property might be in a Special Flood Hazard Area, that doesn't necessarily mean you need to purchase flood insurance. The insurance is only required if your actual house falls within that zone.

So if your house is far from that lake, creek or river or is high up above the area that could flood, you should not have to purchase the insurance. Problem is, as these new maps get around, banks are taking only cursory glances at them and not always checking to see where a house might be before deciding that flood insurance is needed.

Usually, banks give homeowners 45 days to provide proof of insurance. After that, the bank will just put you into a policy of its choosing -- one that is often significantly higher in price than what you'd pay if you bought it yourself.
Homeowners can appeal to FEMA, though that process will likely require 60 days. By that time, they will have either needed to find their own insurance or be placed into one by their lender.

Covert Affairs Review: California, Here She Comes - TV Fanatic

Who had episode four in the TV Fanatic pool for when Annie would be back working for the DPD? I sure didn't, but after getting the boot from Lena for apparently botching the Simon mission, that's exactly where Annie ends up in?"Speed of Life."

This isn't setting the reset button, though. When I was worried that Covert Affairs might send all the stories back to the status quo too soon after the season premiere, I wasn't imagining this. This we can work with.

Annie's Unexpected Visitor

Annie was sent back to work at the DPD, but since Simon came back for her by the end of the hour, and she accepted his profession of "like," the situation is still very fluid. She might just go rogue at this point. Lena might HAVE to bring her back into the fold if she's spending just as much time with Simon as she was before.

Either way, this isn't the usual "blow the new stories up to get things back to normal so that fans don't get mad" issue. This was just one wrinkle in this season's longer running plot? Lena wasn't happy with Annie's performance so she had to drop her. Whether that sticks or not depends heavily on what happens after Annie leaves with Simon in that car.

While Annie's time with Simon took up most of the action during "Speed of Life," it was Auggie's story that pulled at the heart strings of us all. Seriously, Parker?!?! You're doing him like that?!?! I guess I could see this coming, but how dare she?!?! This is Auggie we're talking about!

Obviously she couldn't handle the new situation, and maybe she was right in that they weren't a good fit for each other, but that didn't make it any easier to watch happen. He was crushed.

Luckily for us, a depressed and distraught Auggie is just as entertaining as every other version of this character we have seen to date. Between him being snarky at Annie on the phone with "call me when your schedule clears up," and smashing a bottle of beer of Clark's head, Auggie was a joyous depressed drunk.

The hour was full of sad stories, however, because we also had to endure what might have been the last tender moment between Annie and her sister for a long time. Danielle is indeed moving to California. Anne Dudek was never utilized perfectly on Covert Affairs, so maybe it's for the best.

It's going to be difficult to match great moments like Annie and Danielle sharing that tub of ice cream with a spatula from this point forward.

Others will have to step up. I could use a lot more from Arthur and Joan, that's for sure. Maybe the two will be featured in the near future. What do you all think? Without Danielle and Jai, who needs to come into the limelight a bit more?

What did you think of "Speed of Life?" Are you happy with where the stories are going? Did Parker make the correct decision? And what do you think is next for Annie Walker?

There's Something About...: ...the Pinoy talent

Ralph Guggenheim notes the huge potential in the Philippine Creative Services sector (File Photo)

?
?
?MANILA, Philippines - Marking the maiden staging of the Film, Animation and Gaming Congress of the Department of Tourism on July 26 and 27 was the participation of acclaimed international film and animation professionals, among them Nickelodeon?s Eli Noyes, Cartoon Network Online creator Doug Barry and Pixar co-founder Ralph Guggenheim.
?
Guggenheim, who has served as the Vice President of Feature Animation for Pixar Studios and as lead producer for the 1997 animated hit ?Toy Story,? and who has been executive producer for Electronic Arts, now runs Alligator Planet LLC. His current company is involved in projects that put him in business with various offshore production studios. While he is yet to work with a Filipino studio, he does know our rich history in the creative field.

?Philippines has a long history of animation that I know goes back at least? it?s 20 years that I?ve been involved in this sort of thing and I know that it goes further than that,? Guggenheim tells Bulletin Entertainment on the last day of the Congress. ?And there?s a number of great studios that are here and a number of great young artists whose work we?ve seen over the last few days [that we?ve been in the country]. So we think there?s huge potential here.?

The Congress, with the theme ?Made in the Philippines: From Storytelling to Storyselling,? coincided with the Cinemalaya Film Festival. It aimed to help filmmakers (producers/directors), original content creators, and various other people in Philippine Creative Industries to identify issues and challenges that face them, as well as the various opportunities open to them.

It had also planted the seed in the development of a globally competitive Creative Services in the country. In fact, according to a DTI press release, the Creative Services sector reported revenues in 2011 of about US$142 million for animation and US$7 million for game development. It employs almost 10,000 creative workers and support workers as well.

Of bigger and perhaps more worldwide opportunities for local artists, Guggenheim notes, ?All of the studios that I know have started because a few artists came together and built something and it became larger and larger and they did better and better work as time went on. They weren?t all experts when they started but their expertise grew and their knowledge grew as they worked together. And it?s an industry where young talent is always appreciated and always desired, so there?s no question that this could happen.?

Perhaps his visit would become beneficial to both him and our local artists. ??We always do a lot of projects with overseas companies and we?re always looking for a new, young talent and companies that are capable of creating stuff and that can work together with us in ah? projects. So yeah, we are always in search for that and we think the Philippines will be a great place to work.?

Guggenheim and some fellow speakers planned to wrap up their second day of the Congress on the 27th by staying a few more hours at the CCP. ?I will see my first film at Cinemalaya this afternoon. We?ve been busy with the conference,? he smiles. ?We love independent films and I?ve heard Cinemalaya has great filmmakers and great films so I?m ready to relax and enjoy some films.?

As advice to young creators, Guggenheim closes the interview by offering, ?I was once so young [boy] who had an interest in animation, got together with some people I knew and liked, and things grew and changed and our company became successful. But we didn?t start with anything more than a dream and an idea of what we wanted to do.?

Indeed, big dreams come true not just in the make-believe world of movies and animation but, as Guggenheim proves, also in real life.
