Low-pitched song indicates fairy-wren size

Thursday, February 21, 2013

A male fairy-wren's low pitch song indicates body size, a new international study has shown.

The study led by University of Melbourne researcher Dr Michelle Hall, is the first to show that the larger the male fairy wren, the lower the pitch of his song.

"This is the first time we have been able to show that song pitch indicates body size in song birds," said Dr Hall from the University's Department of Zoology.

The study, which began when Dr Hall was at the Max Planck Institute for Ornithology in Germany, has been published today in the journal PLOS ONE.

Reliable communication about body size between animals is particularly important when communicating with mates or rivals. For example the bigger the rival is, the more likely it is to win in a fight so a song pitch indicating a large size may deter rivals.

"Surprisingly, there is very little evidence that the pitch of calls indicates body size differences within species, except in frogs," she said.

"In birds in particular, there has been no evidence that the pitch of songs indicated the size of the singer until now."

The study involved measuring the leg length (a good indicator of overall body size) of 45 adult male purple-crowned fairy-wrens. It found there was a correlation between the lowest song pitches and male size.

"We found the bigger males sang certain song types at a lower pitch than smaller males," she said.

Purple-crowned fairy-wrens are creek-dwelling birds from northern Australia and, like their close relatives the blue wrens, males sing trill songs after the calls of certain predators, a context that seems to attract the attention of females.

Males have a repertoire of trill song variants, and it is the low-pitched variants that indicate the size of the singer.

Dr Hall showed that it may be the complexity of birdsong that has obscured the relationship between body size and song frequency in the past.

"Birds can have large repertoires of song types spanning a wide frequency range, and some birds even shift the pitch of their songs down in aggressive contexts," she said.

"Focusing on the lowest pitches that males were able to sing was the key to finding the correlation with body size."

Why Don't We Have Flying Cars?

The image of George Jetson and family zipping about town is at once nostalgic and frustrating. Like George, most of us push buttons for a living. But so far, few of us commute in a flying car.

As with many of the technologies we "don't" have (where's my jetpack?), flying cars do exist. The roadable aircraft of today are basically small planes that can be driven legally down a road, usually because of a retractable-wing system.

But, in a 2010 interview, physicist and science-fiction writer Gregory Benford summed up the problem with these designs: "It turns out that if you optimize the performance of a car and of an airplane, they are very far away in terms of mechanical features. So you can make a flying car. But they are not very good planes, and they are not very good cars."

Indeed, PM has rounded up the various contenders out there, many of which had creators who marketed them as the flying car we've all been waiting for. None, though, measures up to the vehicles of sci-fi: The Jetsons didn't lug a propeller around, which is how the Terrafugia Transition stays aloft. The famous Spinner in Blade Runner wasn't packing a jet turbine, which powers the current Moller Skycar.

When people ask for flying cars, they don't want planes that can drive on the ground. They really want cars that drive on the air, which would require some advanced manner of defying gravity. Perhaps magnetic levitation is the ticket; it uses the natural tendency of magnets with the same polarity to repel each other. Trains use this idea. Volkswagen's hyped concept hover car would use the same principle.

"One day, if we have room temperature superconductors, then our cars would float on a cushion of magnetism," theoretical physicist Michio Kaku said in an interview with PC Mag. "Our roads would be made of this superconductor; to get our cars going, all we have to do is blow on them, and they start to move. It would solve the energy crisis, since much of our oil goes into overcoming the friction of the road. "

But such vehicles would require an enormous infrastructure investment: a grid built over the roads to provide the magnetic force. Plus, what's the point? MagLev vehicles would stay just a few inches above the ground; they wouldn't zip around high in the sky like they do on Futurama. And they'd be tethered to the road network, which defeats the entire purpose of sci-fi-style flying cars.

To make vehicles like you see in cartoons, we'd essentially be building small planes that look like cars, which are expensive, awkward to fly, and create a host of new legal issues to deal with. (Do all drivers now need a pilot's license? And should drunk flying be a bigger crime than drunk driving?) Costs would be beyond astronomical, and, while they're not in the cold fusion realm of near-impossibility, high-temperature superconductors don't seem likely to emerge anytime soon. No one will blame you for keeping George Jetson's car on your wish list in the meantime.

Timeless suits from London's Savile Row back in fashion

LONDON (Reuters) - With a blazing fire, leather sofa, and a half-empty bottle of single malt whisky by the door, London bespoke suit-maker Anderson & Sheppard feels more like a gentlemen's club frozen in time than a 21st century luxury retailer.

At the back of the shop a number of impeccably dressed tailors cut cloth on wooden work benches much like they have been doing for the last 100 years. One can almost imagine past customers like Charlie Chaplin, Pablo Picasso or some faded Victorian gentleman turning up at any moment.

This Savile Row tailor, where first names are banned and customers are always "sir", may feel like a museum to Britain's faded imperial glory but the bespoke menswear business on "the Row" is enjoying a remarkable resurgence.

Anderson & Sheppard is just one of the names on London's most renowned street for high-end tailors.

Alongside Gieves & Hawkes, Dege & Skinner, Henry Poole & Co and others, tailors on "the Row" have been dressing royalty, aristocrats, statesmen, great warriors and the wealthy since British dandy Beau Brummel first introduced trousers to fashionable London society at the start of the 19th century.

Behind the fusty facade "the Row" is attracting a new generation of less exclusive young clientele despite suit prices starting at 3,800 pounds ($5,900) with a combination of client discretion, a subtle online presence and absolute attention to detail and quality.

Anderson & Sheppard had a 2012 turnover of 4 million pounds and growth has been over 13 percent every year since 2009.

A number of other houses on Savile Row have also enjoyed over 10 percent growth in recent years with total revenue for the informal group of suitmakers now estimated to be 30-35 million pounds.

"We're doing very well actually. We've found that business has picked up in the last few years, and we couldn't be busier," Anderson & Sheppard manager Colin Heywood said as he showed Reuters around the shop.

RENAISSANCE

The renaissance of classic British menswear is a dramatic turn-around for an industry that was left on the ropes by the rise of decent quality ready-to-wear suits and shirts in shops during the 1970s and 1980s.

Clothes that were then dismissed as old fashioned, over-priced and going the way of bowler hats, are now the subject of renewed interest reflected in sartorial blogs and forums from India to the United States.

"We've noticed that we get a lot more younger customers coming in. I think that's particularly the result of the internet. There's so much more written about bespoke tailoring now in books, magazines and online," Heywood said.

The celebration of Savile Row's handcrafted suits in online forums, top men's magazines and promoted by its own association on the Savile Row Bespoke website (www.savilerowbespoke.com) has allowed tailors on the Row to make a centuries-old tradition irresistible to well-off modern men seeking top quality.

"People find it a lot more accessible and I think it takes away that fear element of people coming in for the first time," Heywood said.

One customer, 38-year-old James Massey who runs a public relations firm, said a bespoke suit was impossible to match.

"I could probably go and spend the same amount of money in Selfridges on a Zegna suit that's made in a factory in Italy with a bit of handstitching, but this is actually made specifically for me," he said.

Dylan Jones, editor at GQ UK, puts the renaissance of British tailoring down to the way men now shop for clothes.

"It's a generational shift. Men today consume far more like women. They're far more sophisticated consumers than they used to be and they expect very good produce at every entry level," he said.

"Menswear is starting to approach 50 percent of a lot of people's business. It's a real growth industry."

Savile Row is particularly popular in international circles where the classic British look is increasingly fashionable.

"One thing that plays fantastically well with foreign press and buyers is the heritage aspect of what we do and there is so much interest in Savile Row," Jones said, referring to the events he runs as chair of the menswear committee for the British Fashion Council.

Within this overall growth market where men are spending more on clothes and demanding higher quality, Savile Row remains uniquely placed in a global industry which luxury consultants Bain & Company estimated was worth more than $34 billion in an October 2012 note.

"London is the home of menswear. We invented the suit and Savile Row is the most important men's shopping street in the world which offers a quality and aspect of heritage that you simply can't get anywhere else," Jones said.

COTTAGE INDUSTRY

While big fashion brands such as Tom Ford, Dior, and Paul Smith, invest heavily in marketing, distribution and staff, Savile Row tailors remain a cottage industry employing only a few dozen people who produce suits on site.

With fewer overheads and an international reputation from generations of suit-making which does not cost a penny in advertising, Savile Row is a surprisingly competitive and durable business model.

"Any of these big fashion brands will have a much bigger mark-up than the Savile Row tailors. No one goes into bespoke tailoring to get rich," said James Harvey-Kelly the menswear designer for French brand Vicomte A who also runs his own made-to-measure company.

"The quality is sensational and that's what Savile Row trades off. They use sensational cloths and its sewn together by absolute experts. They last for generations."

On the other side of Piccadilly the manager of traditional shirtmaker Budd, Andrew Rowland, said his company was reaping rewards for sticking by its principles through the tough times.

"We've never done anything different, but the others have weakened," he said in the cosy shop just off Jermyn Street above which bespoke shirts are still scissored by hand.

Jermyn Street used to be the home of London's bespoke shirt-making industry, but many of the old stores such as T.M. Lewin and Hawes & Curtis expanded into mass sales, pushing down the price by producing shirts in Vietnam and Turkey.

One long-term customer is British actor Edward Fox, who played the title role in "Day of the Jackal". Before sitting down to a cup of tea with Rowland, he explained why he has been coming back for 55 years.

"This is a Budd shirt. It must be at least 10 years old. Just as good today as it was 10 years ago. You don't actually have to spend that much on clothes, you have to look after clothes and you have to buy well originally".

However, traditional tailoring is not always ideal for more design-conscious people, according to Harvey-Kelly.

"Everything for them (Savile Row) is about it falling perfectly with no creases. But in the modern day people sometimes want it to look a bit uncomfortable. They want it to be slim and curl on the sleeve and a lot of tailors refuse to do that".

Heywood at Anderson & Sheppard when asked about modern fashion trends said he had noticed a "slight lean towards narrower trousers".

"We're not fashion-led. Fashions change very quickly and what we like to do is create a suit that's a timeless classic that you can wear in any decade".

Satellite tv or satellite tv is television delivered through orbiting communications satellites located 37,000 km over the earth's surface.

cardsharing - The first satellite television signal was relayed from Europe for that Telstar satellite over North America in 1962. The very first domestic Usa satellite to hold television was Canada's Anik 1, which has been launched in 1973.

Tv, like other communications relayed by satellite, begins with a transmitting satellite antenna with an uplink facility. Uplink satellite dishes are directed toward the satellite what has signals is going to be transmitted to, and therefore are very large, as much as 9 to 12 meters (30 to 40 feet) in diameter. The better the dish, greater accurate positioning and improved signal reception about the satellite. The tv signals is transmitted to devices located on-board the satellite called transponders, which retransmit the satellite signal back on the Earth with a different frequency.

The satellite signal, quite weak after traveling through space, is collected using a parabolic receiving dish, which reflects the weak signal for the dish's centerpiece and is particularly received, down-converted with a lower frequency band and amplified using a device called a low-noise block down converter, or LNB.

A brand new kind of satellite antenna, that won't use a directed parabolic dish and is utilized on a mobile platform say for example a vehicle, was recently announced through the University of Waterloo. On typically referred to as car satellite system.

The satellite TV signal, now amplified, travels to a satellite television on pc receiver box through coaxial cable (RG-6 or RG-10; can not be standard RG-59) and it is converted by using a local oscillator towards the L-band selection of frequencies (approximately). Special on-board electronics inside the receiver box help tune the signal then convert it with a frequency that a standard television may use.

While you known, tv business in United states are generally dominated by two companies, Dish Network and DirecTV. If you wish to get a satellite television on pc within your house, your options are mainly limited to the disposable tv packages that made available from each one of these Dish Network or DirecTV.

It is a quick take on United states tv industry: Hughes's DirecTV, the first high-powered DBS system, went online in 1994 known as the first Us DBS service. In 1996, Echostar's Dish Network went online in america and possesses gone to similar success.

THE RESET: GOP isn't finding Obama's 'open door'

slideshow President Barack Obama says "I'm willing to work with anybody to get this job done" in trying to deflect a speeding meteor of across-the-board spending cuts headed straight for the federal government. "So my door is open."

Republicans argue his door isn't very open considering the president's refusal to consider a fix of targeted spending cuts alone, as Republicans want.

Instead, he's demanding a "balanced" package of cuts and loophole-closing tax increases.

The president has had little direct contact with Republicans to find a way around the roughly $85 billion in indiscriminate "sequester" cuts set to begin in nine days.

"I don't have any calls or communications to read out to you," White House spokesman Jay Carney said at his daily briefing.

Neither party says it wants the March 1 cuts ? coming on autopilot absent congressional intervention ? given the fragile recovery and stubbornly high unemployment.

Obama and House Speaker John Boehner, R-Ohio, have a rocky record in past negotiations.

"Frankly, every time I've gotten into one of these high-profile negotiations, you know, it's my rear end that got burnt," Boehner said in a recent interview with The Associated Press.

Boehner's flexibility is seriously limited by an internal divide between a GOP establishment open to negotiations and an insurgent right resisting compromise.

So both sides have been lobbing shots from afar.

Obama blasted Republicans in a White House speech in front of first-responders whose jobs he suggested are at risk. Boehner hit back, writing in Wednesday's Wall Street Journal that the latest impasse is "a product of the president's own failed leadership."

White House senior adviser Dan Pfeiffer took issue, writing in a White House blog Wednesday that Boehner and the Republicans "would rather see our recovery and middle class economic security be put at risk than close one tax loophole for big corporations and the wealthiest."

So far it's just been back and forth ? with no apparent headway.

Triumph passengers bring class action against Carnival

(Reuters) - The owner of the stricken Carnival Triumph cruise ship was hit by a lawsuit seeking class action status for stranding more than 3,000 passengers for five days on a ship without electricity or adequate sanitation.

Carnival Corp should be held liable for physical and emotional anguish inflicted on the passengers as well as punitive damages, according to the lawsuit by Matt and Melissa Crusan. The lawsuit was filed on Monday in U.S. federal court in Miami.

The Triumph was towed into Mobile, Alabama on Thursday, four days after a fire knocked out the ship's power while it was off the coast of Mexico.

The lawsuit alleged the world's largest cruise company failed to provide a seaworthy ship. In addition, "motivated solely by financial gain" Carnival negligently brought the Triumph to Mobile, where it would be repaired, rather than a closer Mexican port. That decision extended the trip by 350 miles, the plaintiffs said.

Passengers were exposed to disease as sewage and "human waste sloshed around the vessel as the vessel listed while drifting and/or while under tow," according to the lawsuit.

A Carnival spokesman, Vance Gulliksen, said the company does not comment on pending litigation.

The lawsuit seeks to represent all of the passengers on the stricken cruise.

The complaint said that the Triumph ticket limits passengers' rights to bring a class action, but that provision should be voided by Carnival's negligence in using an unseaworthy vessel and not towing the ship to the nearest port.

Carnival has offered Triumph passengers $500, reimbursement for their transportation and many onboard costs, and given them a credit toward a future cruise equal to the amount they paid for the Triumph vacation.

Jim Walker, who specializes in representing cruise ship passengers, told Reuters last week that the compensation offer was probably more than Triumph passengers would likely win in court. Walker is not involved in this suit and said he is unlikely to bring a case.

The class action lawsuit, which was filed by the Lipcon, Margulies, Alsina & Winkleman law firm in Miami, is at least the second by a Triumph passenger. On Friday, Cassie Terry of Brazoria County, Texas sued Carnival.

Michael Winkleman, an attorney with Lipcon, Margulies could not be reached for comment.

Like the Crusans, Terry sued for the conditions aboard the ship, which lacked working toilets and proper ventilation.

The case is Matt Crusan and Melissa Crusan v Carnival Corp, U.S. District Court, Southern District of Florida, No. 13-20592.

Farm virus 'can infect wild animals'

A livestock virus sweeping through British sheep flocks and cattle herds has infected wild deer, say scientists.

The disease, which is spread by insects, causes birth defects in lambs and can reduce milk yields in cattle.

Outbreaks have been reported in farm animals in Belgium, France, Germany, Italy, Luxembourg, The Netherlands, Spain and the UK.

European scientists say wild deer can catch the virus, and are calling for the impact on wildlife to be monitored.

Dr Mutien-Marie Garigliany, a veterinary expert at the Universite de Liege is one of a team of experts studying cases of Schmallenberg virus (SBV) in wildlife in the south of Belgium.

It is just impossible to control midges across an area the size of Europe?

End Quote Prof Trevor Drew Animal Health and Veterinary Laboratories Agency

Dr Garigliany said wild animals such as roe and red deer can potentially act as a reservoir of infection.

"We should implement specific surveillance of wild animals for SBV," he told BBC News.

He said wild boar as well as wild deer show signs of SBV infection, although it is not thought to make them sick.

SBV first appeared in south east England more than a year ago, but has now spread to every county in England and Wales.

Dr Rachael Tarlinton, a virology expert and veterinary scientist at the University of Nottingham, said the disease was having a huge financial impact on some farms.

Lambing season

Reports from veterinary students at the university suggest losses as high as 30% of lambs in some infected flocks.

Dr Tarlinton said the studies in Belgium show wild deer can catch the virus, but the impact on deer - and their offspring - is unknown.

"We know deer get the virus - they produce antibodies to it," she told BBC News.

"But deer have a different placental structure to cows and sheep - so we don't know if it gets across the placenta to affect foetuses."

According to Prof Trevor Drew of the UK government's Animal Health and Veterinary Laboratories Agency, the virus can infect native red deer, fallow deer, sika deer and roe deer.

The disease is transmitted by bites from midges and other insects, which makes it impossible to eradicate from British farms, Prof Drew told MPs last week.

Schmallenberg virus

  • Confirmed outbreaks in several European countries
  • SBV generally causes mild symptoms in adult cattle and sheep
  • If animals catch the infection during pregnancy, it can pass to the unborn lamb or calf, causing stillbirth and birth defects
  • The disease is of concern to farmers, particularly during the lambing season, with some farms reporting heavy losses this winter.

"It is just impossible to control midges across an area the size of Europe," Prof Drew told the Environment, Food and Rural Affairs select committee.

"Even if we had some national campaign, it would be quite simple that the midges would be blown over and of course we cannot control the disease in wild deer."

The UK's deputy chief veterinary officer, Alick Simmons, said a vaccine against SBV is not yet available but several are being developed.

"This is a disease which we believe will either through vaccination or through natural spread become less of a problem over time," he told the committee.

"And already in the areas we have been affected in northern Europe and to a certain extent in the south east of England, the disease is less than it was last year."

Emerging disease

SBV, named after the German town where it was first detected, is an emerging livestock disease in Europe.

It was found in south east England early in 2012, and has since spread to every county in England and Wales.

SBV is not a notifiable condition, suggesting official figures on the number of outbreaks are a vast underestimate.

Red-letter weekend for Latin America's left as Correa wins reelection and Chavez returns home

The photos illustrating the biggest news in Latin America this weekend could not have differed more. One was of a vigorous and victorious Rafael Correa in Ecuador, winning a third term in office Sunday; the other was of Hugo Chavez, Venezuela?s ailing president, smiling but, weeks after surgery for cancer, still lying in a hospital bed.

As Latin America moves into 2013, with Mr. Chavez?s full recovery still an unknown, many have questioned who will take over the leftist helm in the region if Chavez indeed must step down. And while not nearly as endowed with natural resources as Venezuela?s Chavez, Mr. Correa?s name is always on the short list. His clear, third-term victory Sunday positions him even more for the job.

But, as if an indirect message to Correa, Chavez might not be ready for a handover: Just as Correa was enjoying the global spotlight, Chavez took it back. In a surprise move, he returned in the middle of the night back to Venezuela from Cuba where he?s been convalescing, unseen and unheard from for weeks.

?We have arrived back in the Venezuelan fatherland. Thanks, my God! Thanks, my beloved people! Here we will continue the treatment," Chavez said on his Twitter account.

CORREA THE 'NEXT CHAVEZ?'

Correa won nearly 60 percent of the vote on Sunday, avoiding a runoff and making clear that no Ecuadorian leader can compete with the charismatic, former economist who was trained in the US but has maintained a cold distance with the nation of his alma mater.

But he?s also emerging as a can't-beat leader of Latin America?s left, with a flair for the rhetoric that has resonated across the world's most unequal region. His win Sunday, he said in a victory speech, will deepen the "citizens' revolution,? a reference to the empowerment that left-leaning leaders have sought for the region?s poor, much of it via social programs funded by natural resources. ?In this revolution the citizens are in charge, not capital," he said.

In a recent story by The Christian Science Monitor questioning who was poised to lead the left if Chavez steps down, Mart?n Alalu, a political analyst at the University of Buenos Aires, said he believed Correa was Ch?vez?s natural successor.

?He has Ch?vez's antagonistic, anti-American discourse, oil reserves, and a leadership style that promotes a plebiscitary democracy," Mr. Alalu told The Monitor's reporter in Buenos Aires, referring to the 2008 vote to reform Ecuador's constitution.

And that regional leadership position is something that many agree Correa seeks. "Correa aspires to be that next mythical figure [of the Left]," said Colette Capriles, a political analyst at the Sim?n Bol?var University in Caracas, in January.

But it might not be an attainable goal for now, and not just because of more limited resources. As long as Chavez is alive and in power, few if any can or would usurp his long-forged role as Latin America?s leftist voice.

On Sunday, just before dawn, euphoria spread across Caracas. Reuters reports that fireworks were set off and that government ministers celebrated on live television. ?He?s back, he?s back,? one said of Chavez's return.

And Chavez joined in to celebrate. "I remain attached to Christ and trusting in my nurses and doctors," Chavez tweeted. "Onwards to victory forever! We will live and we will conquer!"

Reader's Digest parent seeks bankruptcy protection

NEW YORK (AP) ? The parent company of Reader's Digest has filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection for the second time in less than four years, saying it needs to cut its debt so it can keep restructuring.

RDA Holding Co. says it will keep publishing the magazine during the bankruptcy, and aims to be out of Chapter 11 within six months.

The New York company said late Sunday that it plans to cut its debt load by 80 percent during the restructuring, leaving it with about $100 million in debt. It said it has already reached agreements with its secured lender and more than 70 percent of its secured noteholders. A group of its creditors have supplied $45 million in new financing to help Reader's Digest go through the process as part of a $105 million loan to repay existing bank debt.

Reader's Digest has also been selling off some of its assets. It sold its food website Allrecipes.com for $175 million last year, and it sold its Every Day with Rachael Ray cooking magazine in late 2011. Both went to Meredith Corp., publisher of the Better Homes and Gardens magazine.

Reader's Digest paid circulation fell 0.6 percent to 5.5 million at the end of last year, according to the Alliance for Audited Media. That was about where it stood after cutting its guaranteed circulation in 2009. The circulation-tracking company said Reader's Digest is the fifth-biggest U.S. consumer magazine by circulation, behind two AARP publications, Game Informer Magazine, and Better Homes and Gardens.

RDA's Reader's Digest Association Inc. filed for Chapter 11 protection in 2009 in the midst of a recession and a drop in advertising and circulation. The company emerged from bankruptcy in early 2010 with less debt, but has still struggled.

Robert E. Guth, RDA's president and CEO, said a "complex transformation" begun 18 months ago under new senior managers "has resulted in a more streamlined, more focused, and more profitable business, but we have unfortunately been unable to align our debt levels correspondingly."

Besides Reader's Digest, the company publishes a food publication, Taste of Home, and has 21 brands globally.

The bankruptcy filing in the Southern District of New York covers the company's U.S. businesses. It said its international operations are not part of the filing. Nigeria extremists claim abduction of 7 foreigners

Map locates kidnapping, Nigeria

BAUCHI, Nigeria (AP) ? A little-known Islamic extremist group claimed responsibility Monday for the kidnapping of seven foreign workers from northern Nigeria, threatening their safety if anyone tried to intervene and free them.

The group that calls itself Ansaru issued a short statement, obtained by The Associated Press, in which it said its fighters kidnapped the foreigners Saturday night from a construction company's camp at Jama'are, a town about 200 kilometers (125 miles) north of Bauchi, the capital of Bauchi state.

Authorities said those kidnapped include one British citizen, one Greek, one Italian, three Lebanese and one Filipino, all employees of a Lebanese construction company called Setraco.

The statement said Ansaru committed the abduction "based on the transgression and atrocities shown to the religion of Allah by the European countries in many places such as Afghanistan and Mali." Currently, the French military is conducting operations with the Malian army to rout Islamic fighters who took over that country's north in the weeks after a military coup there last year.

"It is stressed that any attempt or act contrary to our conditions by the European nations or by the Nigerian government will" endanger the hostages, the statement read. The statement offered no conditions, suggesting the group would later contact authorities to make a ransom demand.

Police and security officials in Nigeria did not immediately respond the statement. Greek and Italian diplomats have confirmed their citizens were abducted. Britain's Foreign Office said Monday it is aware of reports that a number of foreign nationals including a British national were abducted. It said the Foreign Office is in contact with the Nigerian authorities.

The U.S. Embassy in Nigeria's capital, Abuja, issued a statement earlier Monday saying none of those taken were U.S. citizens.

In January 2012 Ansaru declared itself a breakaway group from Boko Haram, the north's main terrorist group, analysts say. Boko Haram, whose name means "Western education is sacrilege," has launched a guerrilla campaign of bombings and shootings across Nigeria's predominantly Muslim north. Boko Haram is blamed for at least 792 killings last year alone, according to an AP count.

Ansaru's aims are unknown ? but they have a different message from Boko Haram, according to Raffaello Pantucci, a senior research fellow at the Royal United Services Institute in London.

"They seem to disagree with some of Boko Haram's strategies ? in particular, they disagreed with Boko Haram's tendency to kill Muslims," Pantucci said. "They seem to be more internationally focused, they talk a lot more in global jihad terms and they seem very eager to cultivate that side of their image. It makes them more dangerous."

An analysis published Monday by Stratfor, a U.S.-based private global intelligence firm, suggested Ansaru had stronger ties with al-Qaida in the Islamic Maghreb, the Africa branch of the terror network. It warned that there likely will be more attacks by Ansaru targeting Westerners and Western interests in Nigeria, as well as neighboring nations.

"Kidnappings in northern Nigeria probably will become more frequent," Stratfor warned. "As al-Qaida in the Islamic Maghreb comes under more pressure in northern Mali, it will use all available means, including its affiliate groups, to continue its insurgency."

The attack Saturday in Jama'are saw gunmen first assault a local prison and burn police trucks, authorities said. Then the attackers blew up a back fence at the construction company's compound and took over, killing a guard in the process, witnesses and police said.

The gunmen appeared to be organized and knew who they wanted to target, a local construction worker who witnessed the attack told the AP. He said the Nigerian household staff members at the residence were left unharmed, while the foreigners were quickly abducted. The worker spoke on condition of anonymity as he's not authorized to speak to journalists.

Nigerian President Goodluck Jonathan, in a statement issued Monday through his office, condemned the attack and said he ordered security agencies to "take all necessary action" to locate and rescue the abducted construction workers.

"He assures the relatives of the kidnapped foreign workers as well as the governments of their countries that the federal government and its security agencies are doing everything possible to find their abductors and ensure the safe release of all those they abducted," the statement issued by spokesman Reuben Abati read.

The Ansaru statement hinted that it would kill the hostages and vaguely referenced a previous kidnapping. The group earlier claimed the kidnapping in December of a French national working on a renewal energy project in Nigeria's northern Katsina state.

Britain also linked Ansaru to the May 2011 kidnapping of Christopher McManus, who was abducted with Italian Franco Lamolinara from a home in Kebbi state. The men were held for months, before their captors killed in March 2012 them during a failed Nigerian military raid backed up by British special forces in Sokoto, the main city in Nigeria's northwest.

Authorities initially blamed Boko Haram for the kidnapping, something that it denied. That apparently represented the public's first brush with the group, whose motivations remain murky, but whose threat is increasingly real for foreigners in northern Nigeria.

In November, Britain's interior ministry announced that a parliamentary order that makes membership in or support of Ansaru a criminal offense.

As Tunisia's Ennahda falters, supporters wonder if it can handle the heat

Tunisia's leading party, the Islamist Ennahda, is struggling to deliver prosperity and stability. But its legitimacy is sliding, even among those who flocked to the party after the revolution.

By John Thorne,?Correspondent / February 16, 2013

Demonstrators rally in support of Ennahda, Tunisia's leading Islamist party. The party current dominates the national government, but its future is uncertain.

Before revolution toppled Tunisia?s dictator, Zine El Abidine Ben Ali, Ghada Mtiri?s head scarf could get her into trouble with the police. Afterward, she campaigned for one of his chief victims, the moderate Islamist Ennahda (Al Nahda) party.

For her, Ennahda has stood?for democracy, respect for religion, and the idea that ?no one person can oppress another,? she says.

Now the party is under fire for what critics call a dismal?leadership?record. The murder last week of an opposition?political?leader?ignited a smoldering crisis?over how to replace a discredited cabinet ? and?how to get the original Arab Spring country back on track.

Tunisia has moved steadily toward democracy since Mr. Ben Ali?s departure in January 2011. But last week?s killing unleashed anger over what many call the government?s failure to ensure security and prosperity.

Prime Minister Hamadi Jebali, from Ennahda, has announced a plan for a new cabinet of technocrats, and is asking for the backing of both the parties in government and those in the opposition. If he does not get enough parties to support his proposal, he says he will step down.

For Mtiri and other young Tunisians who rallied?to Ennahda's banner,?the?crisis is an?opportunity to?reflect on the?progress, setbacks, and lessons?of the past two years.

?This phase is not for a single party,? she says. ?This phase is for leaving aside the question of identity and building institutions.?

An end to persecution

Mtiri is a young woman with an easy smile from Sidi Hassine, a working-class district of the capital. In 2009, while studying at the Ecole National d?Ing?nieurs de Tunis, she began wearing an Islamic head scarf.

It was a risky move. Ben Ali?s regime forbade the head scarf in state institutions and harassed women who wore it. Soon enough, Mtiri was stopped by police near her engineering school.

?What are you doing here?? a policeman asked. Mtiri replied that she was a student.

?You?re cultured, then,? said the?policeman. Then he indicated her head scarf.??Why do you wear that thing??

?Because I believe in it,? Mtiri said.

Two years later, Ben Ali was toppled by a wave of protests. Overnight, political parties ? some already existing, many new ??began readying to compete in Tunisia?s first free elections.

Mtiri had already heard of Ennahda. After Ben Ali?s departure,?the party?s pledge to work with secularists while promoting an Arab-Muslim identity won her support.

?I will no longer accept being rejected because I wear a head scarf in my own country, or being told my ideas are backward,? she says.

An experiment in coexistence

Florida Deserves A No. 1 Seed in 2013 NCAA Tournament

Kim Klement-USA TODAY Sports

Many teams could make a great case for being a No. 1 seed in the 2013 NCAA Tournament and the Florida Gators are definitely one of those teams.

Florida is currently 21-3 on the year, with a 11-1 record in the SEC. The SEC may be down this year, but other than the loss to Arkansas, Florida is annihilating teams in this conference.

The Gators beat Missouri, who seemed to be a threat to them at the time, by 31 points. Then there was Ole Miss, who actually looked really good. Once again, Florida won that game, but the Rebels only lost by 14 in that contest which isn?t too bad compared to the other SEC teams. Okay, Kentucky was red hot and surely the Gators? rival would challenge them for the regular season title, right? Wrong. Florida won that game by 17 points.

Florida has also beaten Wisconsin by 18, Marquette by 33 and Florida State by 25. Marquette and Wisconsin are both currently ranked in the top 25.

Sure, the Gators lost two non-conference games to Arizona (by 1) and Kansas State (by 6), but both of those teams are two of the best in the country and were both played on the road essentially.

Billy Donovan has a group of kids this year that play defense with as much effort as it does offense.

The Gators are clearly one of the best teams in the country and their resume alone shows that they should earn a No. 1 seed in the big dance. Other teams may have more quality wins, but no one is winning games by as many points as Florida has been all season long.

If the Gators win both the SEC regular season title and their conference tournament, there is no doubt that they will get a No. 1 seed and at this point there is really no one who can stop Florida from doing so.
