Mexico captures Zetas cartel capo 'El Taliban': navy

The Mexican navy brought a suspected leader of the brutal Zetas drug cartel before news cameras Thursday, after catching the capo amid a violent rift within the powerful criminal gang.

The 42-year-old Ivan Velazquez Caballero, known as "Z-50" and "El Taliban," stood stone-faced as marines presented him to the press, wearing a checkered long-sleeve shirt and a bullet-proof vest with two other captured suspects.

Marines detained Velazquez Caballero on Wednesday in a house in the central city of San Luis Potosi, from where he directed operations in four central and northern Mexican states, the navy said.

He was on the list of the 37 most wanted drug lords -- with a $2.3 million reward for information leading to his arrest.

The arrest shed light on a feud within the Zetas, with the navy saying Velazquez Caballero had defied one of the cartel's bosses.

But while the Zetas are divided, the arrest will likely not disrupt the cartel's operations because it is set up like a franchise with cells spread out in various states, analysts said.

"It's important, because El Taliban was a violent and cruel figure, but it does not weaken the Zetas," said Ricardo Ravelo, author of the book "Five Stories of the Zetas."

Velazquez Caballero had allegedly been the Zetas' regional capo in Zacatecas, Aguascalientes, Guanajuato and Coahuila states since 2007, said navy spokesman Jose Luis Vergara, a vice admiral.

"Some sources say he challenged Miguel Trevino Morales, alias 'Z-40,' starting a struggle for control of San Luis Potosi," Vergara said.

The power struggle is believed to have led to the execution of 14 of Velazquez Caballero's followers in San Luis Potosi in August, he added.

Mexico has been in the grip of a brutal drug war that has left some 60,000 people dead since the launch of a military crackdown against the cartels in 2006.

Authorities have attributed a series of murders near the US border in recent months to disputes among the Zetas.

Two weeks ago, 16 bodies were found in the border city of Nuevo Laredo. Nine of the bodies were hanging from a bridge, with messages from Zetas-linked gangs accusing each other of treason.

A navy source, who requested anonymity, told AFP that Velazquez Caballero had approached Gulf Cartel leaders to seek an alliance against Trevino Morales.

The weekly magazine Proceso has reported that Velazquez Caballero had posted street signs in the north and online videos accusing Trevino Morales of betraying some of his lieutenants and ratting them out to the authorities.

US authorities say the Zetas, who are led by Trevino Morales and Heriberto Lazcano, are one of Mexico's most powerful gangs alongside the Pacific region's Sinaloa federation, led by fugitive Joaquin "El Chapo" Guzman.

Much of the northeast is in the clutches of the Zetas cartel, which was founded by former Mexican special forces soldiers who went rogue and are known for decapitating and dismembering their enemies.

The Zetas were originally hired as enforcers for the Gulf Cartel, but turned on their employers and have fought them for control of lucrative drug routes to the United States.

The navy struck a major blow against the Gulf Cartel this month, arresting its suspected kingpin, Jorge Eduardo Costilla, alias "El Coss," and another senior leader, Mario Cardenas Guillen, known as "El Gordo."

The weakening of the Gulf Cartel and Zetas infighting could clear a path for Guzman to grab the northeast coast, analysts said.

"This is great news for El Chapo. I'm sure he's sitting back and laughing right now," said Sylvia Longmire, a former US Air Force special agent and author of "Cartel: The Coming Invasion of Mexico's Drug Wars."

"I'm sure El Chapo can work this to his advantage," she told AFP. "And I'm sure he's going to try."

Mayor Sam Jones Responds to Possible Health Insurance Hike

(MOBILE, Ala.) - Mayor Sam Jones is speaking out about the Port City's budget woes and a proposal to increase city workers' health insurance premiums.

The city says employees haven't had a hike in their health care contributions in a couple of years. But some are frustrated because they also haven't had a raise in nearly six years.

Jones told Local 15 News there's simply no way around it. For the past 10 months, he and his staff have been looking for ways to cut costs. On Thursday during a finance committee meeting, city leaders discussed the mayor's budget proposal involving employees' health care.

Right now, city employees are paying around 18 percent for their health care premiums. The mayor has proposed an increase to 22 percent. For a single employee who's paying $54 right now for their health care contribution, if the mayor has his way next year it'll cost about $74.

"The bottom line is that what we're trying to do is maintain an insurance plan for everyone at the most reasonable rate we can get and that's what you have to do all the time," said Mayor Jones.

"I'm talking to my colleagues. I've already talked to two of them today about it and I think we're looking at possibly amending the budget so that 22 percent is not in there. But again, it takes four votes," said council member Gina Gregory.

The new fiscal year for the city begins Monday, October 1. The council could take a vote on the mayor's budget Tuesday.

Know Thyself

Change is constant in this universe. We should not be scared of its essence; instead we should be inspired to value its fecund purpose in ameliorating our civilization. Its significant role enlivens us to conquering more heights, reaching our dreams and fulfilling our destiny for the best thing in life. Change is called to be the evidence of life. We cannot grow as an individual if we will not undergo the process of change. It is not a clandestine for us to deny or deprived of because of its explicit goal which is to lead our way and hitch our wagon to the acme of success. Success brings our hopes for an impudence progress. It is our greatest ally to achieve it. To have such kind of determination for change, we must be open-minded to accept and recognize formidable reality around us. This acceptance opens many doors for opportunities. Let our flambouyant spirits grab it. Then, it will guide us in searching for the ultimate truth. This truth seems clairvoyant to the senses or a state of being. It is the primary goal of our existence ? to find reason behind our life. Many philosophers give different views regarding this matter but until now no one can perfectly presented us its true meaning and essence. Its quiddity is still oblivious for our senses to seize it faithfully.

When confronted with the issue of change, when faced with questions as to the way we formulated or organized it, when in a quandary of what the future will bring, we always take a pause; think and re-think; and look back at how things have been going lately. There were so many questions that bother us of what we must have to do which requires us in accepting reality. Have we really taken the right path to progress or change? Have we really moved towards a common direction? Have we really made sure that in all that we do, we think of the best future for ourselves or for everyone?

In my own little voice, I claim to the world that we are doing well and we actually have such mind set - submitting ourselves for the holistic conviction of accepting to undergo examination of our own self.

The unexamined life is not worth living for. These are words from the mind of philosopher who being sentenced to death because of his vocation and mission in life. What does this dictum tell us about? It reveals the reality of life. It depicts liberation from the slavery of ignorance. It upholds the culture of intellect. A revolt against the deception of stupidity makes it impossible to seek its contemplation as an eye-opener for the masses living in blind acceptance. For us to understand in maximum capacity the mystery of life that we have, we need to examine it. It will enable us to grasp answers to the questions that tickling in our minds. It will distort our senses in flexibility and astonishing realization. By examining our life, we will understand what we are, what we are doing and why we are doing such.

Examining or understanding is a revelling activity. It is a stupendous way of searching for the ultimate truth. That is I wanted to discover later on in my journey to fully grasp my existence living with Christ and like Christ.
An act of questioning is the evidence that convinces me that a person is thinking. I asked questions because I wanted to have answers. As if I was in a deep sleep, I was arisen by the clamour of perilous world. This perplexed reality leads my sight to wake up from my hasty sound sleep and challenge myself to scrutinize its existence.

Out of the juvenile world full of complexities, I am looking forward to think and search what is within me and ahead of me. So, I asked questions. I examined my well-being. I wondered for my existence. Who am I? What am I to do? What is its meaning? Who created that meaning? Does the meaning exist? I searched for the answers of these questions, until now. Answers I gained are indefinite for it continuous to evolve. It seemed to be unfathomable. Identifying my primary matter and of being my substantial form is not enough to attain its main or focal point.

Recognizing my strengths and weaknesses as well as my positive or pluses and negative or minuses attributes can be an aid to deepen my understanding. These are my guides to consider conscientiously searching for interminable happiness and life worth living of knowing myself.
This act of questioning with confidence, grants me to hear a spasmodic perpetual voice of my soul. It speaks of my existence. Henceforth, I am liberating from the chains of unquestioning acceptance of whatever is at hand. I am resisting with those truths that hold me back in the thoughtless conformity. So, I can say, I am free to live the life and lead the world, my world in a vintage deftness of my philosophy in life guided by the methodological and philosophical vehicle body of knowledge.

From accepting the reality of change to the sense of wonder processed through submission for life examination to liberation may lead to identify my personhood. It entails or necessitates me to know and to do something about myself. That is what I am doing now. With my personal conviction and own creativity. I am aiming for the highest intensity for the quest of my identity and purpose. It is a kind of determination in examining one?s life worthy to stand for and worth living for.

U.S. intelligence takes blame for mixed Libya attack messages

Director of National Intelligence James Clapper's office on Friday tried to explain the shifting public explanations for who was behind the deadly Sept. 11?attack on the American compound in Benghazi, Libya. DNI public affairs director Shawn Turner said U.S. intelligence concluded "in the immediate aftermath" of the assault that it had ?begun "spontaneously" in the wake of violent protests in Egypt.

"We provided that initial assessment to Executive Branch officials and members of Congress, who used that information to discuss the attack publicly and provide updates as they became available," Turner said.?"As we learned more ... we revised our initial assessment to reflect new information indicating that it was a deliberate and organized terrorist attack carried out by extremists."

The statement could take some of the heat off the White House over some of its early explanations for what happened in Benghazi, which claimed the lives of American Ambassador to Libya Chris Stevens and three colleagues. White House press secretary Jay Carney, noting that an FBI investigation was ongoing, repeatedly tied the attack to public anger at an Internet video that insults Islam.

The White House drew fire from Republicans who rejected that early explanation and said the attack was clearly terrorism. Carney accused the president's political foes of trying to score partisan points with the attack. But by late last week, Carney was saying it was "self-evident" that it was a terrorist attack. White House officials say his explanation changed as new evidence came to light.

Still, a knowledgeable source told Yahoo News last week that the U.S. intelligence community had reached the conclusion that the attack was the work of terrorists on "Day One." The source repeated that assessment on Thursday. Top Libyan officials came out shortly after the assault to describe it as a terrorist attack. President Barack Obama, in September 12 remarks about the tragedy, vowed that "no acts of terror will ever shake the resolve of this great nation."

Turner also said in his statement that "it remains unclear if any group or person exercised overall command and control of the attack, and if extremist group leaders directed their members to participate.?However, we do assess that some of those involved were linked to groups affiliated with, or sympathetic to al-Qaeda.

"We continue to make progress, but there remain many unanswered questions," he said. "As more information becomes available our analysis will continue to evolve and we will obtain a more complete understanding of the circumstances surrounding the terrorist attack."

It was unclear how long the "immediate aftermath" scenario remained in force, and when the intelligence community revised its assessment. An email to Clapper's press office seeking more details on that front went unanswered.

MYRTLE BEACH - Study shows how much real estate prices have ...

MYRTLE BEACH -- Sales of single-family houses along the Grand Strand are up over last year, but prices have dropped nearly $63,000 since they spiked in 2007 because of foreclosures and short sales, according to a new study.

The median sales price of Horry County houses peaked in 2007 at $223,650, and has declined each year since with today?s home price estimated near 2004 levels at $161,000, according to a report from SiteTech Systems, a local company that tracks the real estate market.

The prices began to decline after 2007 when the supply of houses outpaced the demand. Prices were inflated based on an artificial demand, there were relaxed underwriting standards, unemployment was on the rise, and the economy took a downturn, said Todd Woodard, president and chief operating officer of SiteTech Systems of Myrtle Beach. That caused a growing number of homeowners to go underwater where they owe more on the mortgage than the house is worth and resulted in more default and distressed properties, Woodard said.

Those distressed properties - the foreclosures and properties nearing foreclosure that are sold as short sales- typically sell for significantly less than other properties on the market, which drives down overall property values, said Tom Maeser, a real estate analyst for the Coastal Carolinas Association of Realtors.

Several local Realtors say overall prices are bottoming out, with Grand Strand prices rising 3 percent in August for single-family houses, according to the Multiple Listing Service.

?When we start to see three to four months of prices increasing, we are getting rid of foreclosures, which mean a healthy market,? Maeser has said.

The median sales price of single-family houses has been consistently about $190,000 over the last three years, while the price on short sales and bank-owned properties has steadily dropped each quarter, according to SiteTech?s report.

?Sales activity is up compared to last year; however sales prices are still down?exclusively driven by distressed sales because properties are being sold for less than historically they have been,? Woodard said.

The median sales price on short sales was at $143,500 from April through June this year, down from $155,600 during the same period in 2011 and down from $190,000 during the same period in 2010, the report stated. The price for bank-owned properties was $119,900 during the second quarter this year, down from $126,250 the second quarter in 2011, and down from $140,500 the second quarter of 2010.

Bank-owned sales, which are 62 percent of the distressed sales, have been pulling the overall median sales price down about five to seven percent each year.

Now that percentage is more at about two percent each year, Woodard said.

It may be down but not at the level as before, which means the area is starting to stabilize, Woodard said.

Roger Fouch, a Realtor with Coldwell Banker Chicora?s Carolina Forest office whose specialties include foreclosures and short sales, said overall prices are going up because banks are letting out a few properties at a time into the market.

?Prices are going up a little bit here in the last few months overall,? Fouch said. ?One reason is that banks are doling out a few foreclosures and short sales so they don?t drive prices drastically down.?

Prices will stabilize and rise when the rate of distressed sales decline, according to SiteTech?s report.

About 28 percent of all single-family house sales are foreclosures or short sales even though foreclosures and short sales make up 19 to 20 percent of the area?s inventory of single-family houses, according to the report.

A lot of distressed sales of single-family houses are in the Carolina Forest, Forestbrook/Socastee and Conway areas.

?New subdivisions are popping up where we saw the greatest concentration of distressed sales [in those areas] because that?s where more activity is with single-family residential,? Woodard said.

About 397 houses sold along the Grand Strand in August compared to 357 houses during the same month last year, according to a market report from SiteTech Systems.

About 109 Grand Strand houses that were foreclosures or short sales sold in August compared to 81 houses in August 2011, the market report stated.

Danielle Vallario was a homeowner who did a short sale on her three-bedroom Myrtle Beach area condo.

Vallario, who bought her condo for $77,900 in September 2009, said she started to have financial problems and got behind a couple of mortgage payments this year. She ended up selling her condo for $44,800.

?Maybe I was too young and shouldn?t have bought,? said 24-year-old Vallario, who has a 2-year-old son.

Vallario now lives in a two-bedroom condo that she is renting, which makes it easier, but she is still struggling, Vallario said.

The area would be able to get rid of properties faster if it does more short sales because the process is quicker and there?s a better recovery for the banks, Woodard said. He said bank-owned properties have been selling at a higher discount than short sales.

?If the banks still have a large amount of (shadow inventory) foreclosures to place on the market we could continue this trend for years to come,? Scott Ellis, broker associate with Remax Southern Shores in North Myrtle Beach and president of the Coastal Carolinas Association of Realtors, said in an email.

Fouch said it could be two to three years before the area?s foreclosures and short sales are gone completely.

The area?s inventory of distressed properties has been declining.

The area?s inventory dropped from 831 to 781 listings of distressed single-family homes in August compared to August 2011, the market report stated.

Overall, there are close to 5,000 distressed properties along the Grand Strand, meaning one out of 50 parcels is distressed, the report stated. Out of the 5,000 properties, more than 3,400 are bank-owned, with most of those properties being vacant residential lots, the report stated.

The Grand Strand?s inventory for non-distressed single-family houses dropped from 4,821 listings to 4,725 in August compared to August 2011, the report stated.

A declining inventory of single-family houses, job growth and improved consumer confidence will also strengthen the Grand Strand?s real estate market and get many ?fence sitters? ? those people waiting to buy ? back into the market, Woodard said. Buyers are enjoying lower-than-ever interest rates, with the rate on a 30-year mortgage falling to 3.40 percent last week - another record low.

Fouch said those who have been waiting to buy are starting to come off the fence because they ?realize we?re at the bottom of pricing and at the bottom of interest rates.?

Ellis said most of those he has been dealing with understand the market conditions and are moving to purchase.

?The feeling I receive from most is that we are close enough to the bottom they feel they will get a return on [their] investment because they are not planning on trying to flip or resale in six months,? Ellis said in his email. ?The market appears to be rebounding. If things continue to improve, I think next year could be a very positive year for real estate along the Grand Strand.?

Ask the Adviser: Investing for Retirement ? Financial Survival Network

Laying out the options to consider

by Adam Taggart
Chris Martenson?s Peak Prosperity

Last month, we piloted a new type of podcast in which we directed your questions about money to one of the financial advisory firms we endorse. Based on the strongly positive response we received from listeners, we are going to make this a regular recurring feature.

In this week?s podcast, Chris speaks with Bill Cole, Mike Preston and John Llodra: partners at the other firm we endorse.

A disproportionate percentage of the questions our readers have submitted are about retirement. So this podcast focuses exclusively on that topic, addressing such issues as:

  • If much of my retirement capital is within an employer-sponsored plan, what are my options?
  • What are the risks of keeping my money in a retirement plan for years to come?
  • Even though I?m not retired yet, should I cash out of my 401k/IRA?
  • If I withdraw early to invest in other assets, what sort of hit will I take? Are there ways to avoid early withdrawal penalties?
  • If I?m over 59 1/12, how should I determine my schedule for making withdrawals?
  • How can I hold precious metals in my retirement account?
  • What is a non-traditional IRA and what investments can I hold in it? How do I go about opening one?
  • What exactly are annuities? Do they make sense any more as a retirement vehicle?

As with last time, there wasn?t enough time to make it through all of the prepared questions. We will address the remaining ones in a future podcast.

Researchers investigate aggression among kindergartners

ScienceDaily (Sep. 27, 2012) ? Not all aggressive children are aggressive for the same reasons, according to Penn State researchers, who found that some kindergartners who are aggressive show low verbal abilities while others are more easily physiologically aroused. The findings suggest that different types of treatments may be needed to help kids with different underlying causes for problem behavior.

"Aggressive responses to being frustrated are a normal part of early childhood, but children are increasingly expected to manage their emotions and control their behavior when they enter school," said Lisa Gatzke-Kopp, assistant professor of human development and family studies. "Kids who don't do this well, who hit their classmates when they are frustrated or cause other types of disturbances in the classroom, are at especially high risk for long-term consequences including delinquency, violence, dropping out of school, abusing substances and even suicide. Research tells us that the earlier we can intervene, the better the chances of getting these children back on track."

Gatzke-Kopp and her colleagues, who include Mark Greenberg, professor of human development and family studies and of psychology, asked each of the kindergarten teachers in all 10 of the elementary schools in Pennsylvania's Harrisburg School District to rate the aggressive behaviors of their students on a six-point scale with items such as "gets in many fights" and "cruelty, bullying or meanness to others." Using these data, the team recruited a group of high-risk children (207 children) and a group of low-risk children (132 children) to undergo a range of neurobiological measures aimed at understanding how aggressive children experience and manage emotions differently than their non-aggressive classmates.

The team assessed all of the children's cognitive and academic skills using standardized tests that identified the children's developmental level of vocabulary, spatial reasoning and memory. In addition, the team asked teachers to provide ratings of each child's behaviors, including their levels of aggression, disobedience and sadness, as well as their social skills and level of self-control in the classroom.

The researchers also assessed the children's brain functioning using a mobile research laboratory they brought to the schools. Within the mobile lab, the team measured the children's heart rate and skin conductance activity during tasks designed to elicit emotional responses, including showing the children short video clips of a cartoon character in a variety of situations depicting fear, sadness, happiness and anger. The researchers wanted to understand how emotional and physical arousal to different types of emotions differed between children who engage in aggressive behavior and children who don't engage in aggressive behavior, as well as how different children who engage in aggressive behavior react.

According to Gatzke-Kopp, the assessments enabled the researchers to understand how cognitive and emotional processing may contribute to the development of aggressive tendencies. Specifically, the team found that 90 percent of the aggressive kids in the study could be characterized as either low in verbal ability or more easily physiologically aroused. The results will appear in the August 2012 issue of Development and Psychopathology.

"What we may be seeing is that there are at least two different routes through which a child may act aggressively," Gatzke-Kopp said. "Because these are very different processes, these children may need different approaches to changing their behavior."

The first group of kids was characterized by lower verbal ability, lower levels of cognitive functioning and fewer executive function skills.

According to Gatzke-Kopp, children need verbal skills to understand the feelings of others and guidance from adults, and to express feelings without hitting. They also need adequate cognitive and executive-function abilities to manipulate information and to think of alternatives to hitting and fighting.

"This group of kids may be functioning at a cognitive level that is more akin to a preschooler than a kindergartner," Gatzke-Kopp said. "They have a harder time extracting what other people are feeling. They don't have a nuanced sense of emotions; everything is either happy or sad to them. So they might not be as good at recognizing how their behavior is making another child feel. They may literally have a hard time 'using their words,' so hitting becomes an easier solution when they are frustrated."

The second group of kids had good verbal and cognitive functioning, but they were more physiologically aroused. They were more emotionally reactive, and tended to have more stressors in their lives.

"These children may be able to tell you that if somebody pushed them on the playground they would go get a teacher, but the push happens and they kind of lose it and it doesn't matter what they should do, they just act on impulse," Greenberg said. "One possibility is that the threshold for managing frustration is quite low for these kids. So what we might consider a minor annoyance to them is a major threat. When they are calm they function very well, but when they lose control of their emotions, they can't control their behavior."

In the future, the team plans to examine how these different types of children respond to an intervention delivered over the second half of kindergarten and the first half of first grade.

The Pennsylvania Department of Health funded this research. Other authors of the paper include Christine Fortunato, postdoctoral fellow, and Michael Coccia, statistical consultant, both in the Penn State Prevention Research Center for the Promotion of Human Development.

Instant View: Reaction to France's 2013 budget

LONDON (Reuters) - President Francois Hollande's Socialist government unveiled steep tax hikes on business and the rich on Friday in a 2013 budget aimed at showing France has the fiscal credentials to remain at the core of the euro zone.

Following are analysts' reaction to the draft approved by the cabinet.

PHILIPPE WAECHTER, ECONOMIST, NATIXIS ASSET MANAGEMENT

"What raises a few questions for me is how will the conditions arise to reach the 3 percent (deficit-to-GDP ratio) with an optimistic growth forecast."

"The ambitions that were flagged are very audacious ... I have a hard time seeing the story how we're going to find the necessary growth in 2013 and afterwards... So far we have a lot of numbers and not the story."

GILLES CARREZ, CONSERVATIVE CHAIRMAN OF FRENCH PARLIAMENT'S FINANCE COMMITTEE

"Never have households and companies been subjected to such a fiscal shock. It's a very bad choice. More savings should have been made...

"There are no structural measures. Therefore, it's a short term-focused budget with no vision. There's nothing about the competitiveness of companies whereas that should a major priority."

PATRICK JACQ, RATE STRATEGIST, BNP PARIBAS, PARIS

"The important thing is that the deficit target can be achieved even if there might have to be some adjustments in a mini-budget next year."

"The gross debt supply should be lower than this year's and this should be positive for bond markets."

ERIC CHANEY, CHIEF ECONOMIST, AXA

"The government has understood that the increase in the public debt has got to be halted but the way that they are doing it is not the right way. It amounts to strongly increasing the tax burden on companies, their shareholders and executives, in other words those who create added value."

"It will lead to an even bigger loss of competitiveness and so a reduction in long-term growth. That will in turn keep the deficit and debt from being reduced over the long term."

Across the country in 50 days - USU Statesman - Utah State University

Many students are creative in their attempts to relieve stress, but Director of Campus Recreation Kevin Kobe used a technique last spring that few students have ever employed, embarking on a seven week cycling trip spanning the width of the United States.

???

?I like to go and come back with the batteries recharged,? said Kobe.

???

Kobe made the 3,150 mile trip with his longtime friend Josh Archibald, who has accompanied Kobe on many cycling tours over the years. Kobe said they started planning the trip six months beforehand, in the middle of a heavy workload involving preparation for the vote on the Aggie Recreation Center and Legacy Field. They started their trip on March 3, 2012 by taking rental bus to San Diego, Calif., where they would begin cycling.

???

?We left the day after the vote passed on the Legacy Field project and Recreation Center, with our bikes in the water in the Pacific Ocean at Ocean Beach Park,? Kobe said.

??

Kobe said to make this trip he took his Specialized Expedition touring bike, which he purchased in the 80?s and cost him approximately $150.

???

?It?s the same bike I commute with every day,? he said. ?It?s basically an old touring bike.?

???

Kobe said their whole goal was to not have the bikes loaded down ? they wanted to bring just enough to be comfortable.

???

?If something didn?t have more than one use, we didn?t bring it,? Kobe said.

???

He said their clothing was not specific to cycling and they didn?t wear the typical cycling garb of spandex shorts and jerseys, but rather long sleeve button-up shirts ? to protect them from the sun ? and regular nylon shorts with pockets.

???

?We could walk into a diner and look like regular people,? he said. ?People told us we looked like we were on a weekend bike tour.?

Clash against India a mini grand final: Hussey

Colombo, Sep 26

Australia's veteran batsman Mike Hussey feels that Friday's Super Eights clash with India would be a mini-grand final in the World Twenty20.

Australia, who are yet to lift a World Twenty20 title, face a tall order in the Super Eights stage. First they take on India and then South Africa and Pakistan.

"The pressure and tension are only going to rise as we get closer to that India match because it's a huge game," Hussey was quoted as saying by the Australian media Wednesday.

Hussey feels a win can help Australia stake their claim for a place in the semi-final.

"If we can win that first one in the Super Eights, it does give you that confidence and that little buffer that you know you just need one out of the last two to get through. It's pretty much an early grand final really in the context of the tournament," he said.

Mars rover finds first evidence of water: a river of it

CAPE CANAVERAL, Florida | Thu Sep 27, 2012 5:37pm EDT

CAPE CANAVERAL, Florida (Reuters) - NASA's Mars rover, Curiosity, dispatched to learn if the most Earth-like planet in the solar system was suitable for microbial life, has found clear evidence its landing site was once awash in water, a key ingredient for life, scientists said Thursday.

Curiosity, a roving chemistry laboratory the size of a small car, touched down on August 6 inside a giant impact basin near the planet's equator. The primary target for the two-year mission is a three-mile (five-km) -high mound of layered rock rising from the floor of Gale Crater.

Scientists suspect the mound, known as Mount Sharp, is the remains of sediment that once completely filled the crater. Analysis of a slab of rock located between the crater's north rim and the base of Mount Sharp indicate a fast-moving stream of water once flowed there.

Images taken by Curiosity and released on Thursday show rounded stones cemented into the rock, which rises like a piece of jack-hammered sidewalk from the planet's surface.

The stones inside the rock are too big to have been moved by wind, Curiosity scientist Rebecca Williams, with the Planetary Science Institute in Tucson, Arizona, told reporters on a conference call.

"The consensus of the science team is that these are water-transported gravel in a vigorous stream," she said.

The rock is believed to be from the floor of an ancient stream which was once between ankle- and knee-deep.

The analysis is based on telephoto images taken by the rover, which is en route to a patch of land named Glenelg where three different types of rock intersect.

Scientists have not yet decided if the slab of rock warrants a chemical analysis, or if there are better targets for Curiosity to look for the building blocks of life and the minerals to preserve it.

"The question about habitability goes beyond the simple observation of water on Mars," said lead scientist John Grotzinger at the California Institute of Technology.

"Certainly flowing water is a place where microorganisms could have lived. This particular kind of rock may or may not be a good place to preserve those components that we associate with a habitable environment," he said.

The $2.5 billion Mars Science Laboratory Curiosity mission is NASA's first astrobiology mission since the 1970s-era Viking probes.

Romney, Obama focus on US posture abroad

(AP) ? President Barack Obama and Republican challenger Mitt Romney are sparring over how best to address U.S. challenges abroad in nearly back-to-back addresses at the Clinton Global Initiative's annual meeting.

Following deadly anti-American protests in Muslim countries over the past two weeks, Romney was to outline plans Tuesday to rework the U.S. foreign aid system, tying development money to requirements that countries allow U.S. investment and remove trade barriers. Obama also was to address top foreign leaders, CEOs and nongovernmental organizations at the gathering spearheaded by former President Bill Clinton.

The event puts the two presidential contenders in front of the same audience on the day Obama also was delivering a major address to the United Nations General Assembly. Both men were drawing contrasts in a presidential contest in which the state of the U.S. economy has been paramount, but which shifted focus this month to foreign policy after attacks in Libya killed four Americans, including the U.S. ambassador there.

In interviews and at campaign events Monday, Romney assailed Obama's leadership abroad, leading a chorus of Republicans in criticizing the president for what they said was minimizing the death of the Ambassador Chris Stevens. Obama, in an interview with CBS' "60 Minutes," said recent violence in the Mideast was due to "bumps in the road" on the way to democracy. Romney on Monday also suggested Obama was leaving American foreign policy at the mercy of events instead of working to shape global politics in America's interest.

At the United Nations, Obama planned a sweeping defense of his policy of engagement overseas. The president planned to "send a clear message that the United States will never retreat from the world, will bring justice to those who harm Americans and will stand strongly for our democratic values abroad," National Security Council spokesman Tommy Vietor said in an email.

Romney's focus on foreign aid was likely to draw attention to the situation in Egypt, a U.S. ally and the recipient of billions of dollars in American assistance each year. That aid has come under new scrutiny in the wake of protests that saw Egyptians scaling the walls of the U.S. Embassy in Cairo. Romney has said he would put stricter conditions on U.S. aid to Egypt's newly installed government, now headed by an Islamist president. The Obama administration reinstated military aid to Egypt earlier this year despite concerns about abuse as the country transitions to democratic rule.

Romney's campaign said Monday that the current system of foreign aid "reflects an outdated way of thinking about the world."

Both Romney and Obama will appear on a stage at the gathering led by Clinton, who just a few weeks earlier was offering a forceful defense of Obama's economic record and plans for the future at the Democratic National Convention in Charlotte, N.C.

"I think the president's plan is better than the Romney plan, because the Romney plan fails the first test of fiscal responsibility: The numbers don't add up," Clinton said in that speech, one of several jabs at the Republican nominee.

During the last presidential election, both Obama and 2008 Republican nominee John McCain spoke at Clinton's annual meeting. That year, the former president had warm words for both men. He praised McCain's stance on global warming and complimented Obama's approach to a meeting the two had held earlier in the month at Clinton's Harlem office.

After his speech to the Clinton meeting, Romney planned to discuss education policy at a forum sponsored by NBC News. He also planned to join running mate Paul Ryan at a campaign rally in Ohio.

Video: 3-D time-lapse imaging captures twisted root mechanics for first time

Tuesday, September 25, 2012

Using an advanced 3-D time-lapse imaging system, a group of physicists and plant biologists from Cornell University and the Boyce Thompson Institute for Plant Research have discovered how certain plant roots exhibit powerful mechanical abilities while navigating their environment.

The research, published in this week's online Early Edition of Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences, could eventually assist in breeding crop plants optimized for growth in areas where climate change or over farming has led to difficult soil conditions.

The researchers grew Medicago truncatula plants in a transparent gel consisting of two layers ? a soft, top layer and a stiff, lower layer. The roots grew straight down until reaching the lower layer, where they began to twist and buckle into spring-like shapes, much like a string begins to curl if it's continuously twisted in one direction.

Combining 3-D movies with measurements and mathematical modeling, the research sheds new light on root growth revealing the role mechanics plays in determining the root shapes. Ultimately, this led to a previously unknown connection between root geometry, growth, and force generation.

"When the roots hit the stiff barrier, growth causes them to buckle like a wire or rod that's been compressed. But by twisting, the buckled roots become helical, allowing the root to push off more gel and get more force at the tip," said Jesse Silverberg, a Cornell graduate student in the Department of Physics and lead researcher for the study.

"Suppose the plant is growing along and finds itself stuck at a layer of clay or tough clump of soil. The root needs an extra force to push through these barriers, and the mathematical model tells us how large of a helix the root needs to grow to do just that. Roughly, the stiffer the barrier, the larger the helix," said Silverberg.

The researchers also used the 3-D technology to discover that 74 percent of the plant roots twisted in a counter-clockwise manner. Silverberg says further research may reveal similar behavior in other plant species.

Gilbert Melendez Injured, September 29 Strikeforce Event Cancelled ...

SF Cancelled Gilbert Melendez Injured, September 29th Strikeforce Event Cancelled

Now this is getting a bit ridiculous.

Last minute injuries have begun to take their toll on the sport of mixed martial arts.?The UFC?was forced to cancel their first event ever at UFC 151 due to Dan Henderson?s eleventh hour injury earlier this month.?UFC 153, which is scheduled to take place in Brazilon October 13th,?was totally ravaged?due to injuries sustained by featherweight champion Jose Aldo and UFC star Quinton ?Rampage? Jackson.

Strikeforce showed that it was not immune to the?rampant?injury bug either as?news broke out last week that Frank Mir was forced to pull out of his heavyweight headline against Daniel Cormier on November 3rd.

Unfortunately for fans, the plague is not over yet as Strikeforce just released a statement indicating that Gilbert Melendez is also hurt and will not be able to defend his title on Saturday, September 29th in Sacramento.

The organization?posted this?press release earlier today:

STRIKEFORCE? announced this evening that its event planned for Saturday, Sept. 29 at Power Balance Pavilion inSacramento,Calif.has been cancelled. STRIKEFORCE lightweight champion Gilbert Melendez, who was set to defend his title against Pat Healy, sustained an injury in training that forced his withdrawal from the card.

Without the Melendez-Healy title bout, SHOWTIME?, which determines which fights are televised on the premium network, decided that it would not air Saturday?s scheduled event.

?When SHOWTIME informed us that it would not be airing the event, we made the difficult decision to cancel Saturday?s card inSacramento,? STRIKEFORCE CEO Scott Coker said. ?Without a television partner, we simply could not move forward with this event. We wish Gilbert a speedy recovery and will work diligently and quickly to reschedule the fighters affected by this news on upcoming cards.?

This string of injuries is undoubtedly the worst that the sport has ever seen andt remains to be seen whether or not?injuries and the subsequent cancellations?or subpar?replacement events?will impact the sports popularity going forward.

What do you think? Are you getting sick of the injuries?

Morsi says under his rule Egypt will be more independent from US

Mohammed Morsi, president of Egypt expressed his intent to rule a more independent Egypt, less beholden to Western and American standards than it was under ousted leader Hosni Mubarak.

By Associated Press / September 23, 2012

Egyptian President Mohamed Morsi gestures while speaking during a media conference at EU headquarters in Brussels Sept. 13. In an interview with the New York Times, Morsi said he plans to lead a more independently-minded Egypt.

On the eve of his first visit to the United States as?Egypt's?president, Islamist Mohammed Morsi said he will demonstrate more independence from the US in decision-making than his predecessor Hosni Mubarak and told Washington not to expect?Egypt?to live by its rules.

Morsi sent that message in an interview with the New York Times after a wave of violence erupted across the Muslim world over an amateur film produced in the US that was deemed offensive to Islam and its prophet Muhammed. The film raised news tensions between Washington and?Egypt.

Morsi criticized US dealings with the Arab world, saying it is not possible to judge Egyptian behavior and decision-making by American cultural standards. He said Washington earned ill will in the region in the past by backing dictators and taking "a very clear" biased approach against the Palestinians and for Israel.

"Successive American administrations essentially purchased with American taxpayer money the dislike, if not the hatred, of the peoples of the region," he told the paper in the interview published late Saturday, drawing a clear distinction between the American government and the American people. Those administrations "have taken a very clear biased approach against something that (has) very strong emotional ties to the people of the region that is the issue of Palestine."

He stressed that unlike his predecessor, Mubarak, he will behave "according to the Egyptian people's choice and will, nothing else."

Morsi, who was sworn in on June 30 after the first democratic elections in?Egypt's?modern history, has been cautious not to sharply depart from Mubarak's foreign policy path, particularly the longstanding alliance with the United States.

But with an Islamist president at the helm of the Arab world's most populous country, there are already differences and changes of focus. Morsi has been expected to distance himself from what many Egyptians saw as Mubarak's compliance with Washington's agenda in the Middle East, especially because his Muslim Brotherhood group has been a vocal critic of US policy in the region and in the Muslim world.

In the interview, Morsi dismissed criticism that he responded too slowly when protesters managed to scale the walls of the heavily fortified US Embassy in Cairo on Sept. 11. The demonstrators replaced the American flag with a banner carrying the Islamic declaration of faith.

Morsi said he needed to deal with the situation "wisely" and took time to avoid a backlash from an angry but small crowd of protesters.

While he praised President Barack Obama for moving "decisively and quickly" to support Arab Spring uprisings against longtime authoritarian leaders, he said Arabs like Americans want to live "free in their own land, according to their customs and values, in a fair and democratic fashion."

To this end, Morsi urged the US to live up to its commitments to support an independent Palestinian state.

Since taking office, Morsi, 61, has been immersed in largely foreign policy issues. He has strongly criticized the Syria regime for violently repressing the uprising there, tried to warm relations with the Palestinians, and has dealt with tensions between the Middle East and the West over the anti-Islam film.

Reflecting the tension with Washington over the protests, Obama was asked about?Egypt?a day after anti-US protests broke out in?Egypt?on Sept. 11 and he said he does not consider it an ally or an enemy.

The Times asked Morsi if the US was an ally, to which he replied with a laugh by saying: "That depends on your definition of ally."

But he quickly followed by saying he wants a real friendship with the US.

"I think what I am trying seriously (is to) look into the future and to see that we are real friends."
